To correctly tune your strings to the correct pitch, you need to hear the correct note as a guide. No surprise there! But where do you get this pitch? Any instrument or tool that is already in tune can provide you with a "reference pitch." You could use a piano or another guitar, or you could go old-school and use a pitch pipe or tuning fork. You can even find a few tools online that will give you a reference pitch to work with. The only problem with using a reference pitch to tune by ear is that it requires a more developed ear and can be challenging for the beginner. While it's important to develop your ear so that you can hear slight differences in pitch, there is a quick, painless approach to make your guitar sound beautiful again.

The trick is to use an electronic guitar tuner! A guitar tuner recognizes which note you are playing and shows you if it is sharp (high) or flat (low) of the desired pitch. If you are tuning an acoustic guitar, the tuner will use a built-in microphone to detect the sound coming from the guitar. Adjust the string using the tuning peg on the guitar head. Tightening the string will raise the pitch and loosening the string will lower the pitch. (Tighten the string when you are flat; if it says you are sharp, loosen the string.)

6. Rinse and repeat for each string!

When you are done tuning all of your strings go through all of them quickly one more time. As you adjust each string, the tension on the neck of your guitar changes, which affects the tension of the other strings. When my mom finally decided to take that plum posting as a Divisional
Head, I knew I was in trouble. Her office hours stretched way beyond my
school hours. And anyway, I was privy to the many discussions my parents
had about 'Honey, what do we do with the kids?' Well, finally they struck
gold - an educational after school program. Won't that be just grand? Kids
are learning new things while parents are happily minting greenbacks!

And so, we went directly to another class after our school. The brochure
said that they would be 'using fun activities and innovative teaching
methods to fill the gap in your child's understanding'. I suppose they
meant that the teacher would write down the homework and we were to copy
it. At least, this is what happened most of the time. Of course, we didn't
tell our parents. How would that help? They'd simply get smart and shift us to a class that would actually make us solve our homework.

I hated the classes. Mostly, I was bored to tears or falling asleep.
After so many hours at school who'd want to spend the entire afternoon
with the same books? But, as a child, one had little choice in these
matters. Especially when one's parents were cleverly telling one that
mommy's salary will help get us that spanking new TV or that video game.

Then, one day, my sister decided to rock the proverbial boat. She decided
she had enough of studying and refused to go to the after school program.
That's when my parents began to smell something stale. Shortly after that,
they put us in a better program (o, yes, another educational one). This

(this, when PCs were just beginning to make their presence felt). We

Gordon Brown resigned as British prime minister Tuesday, paving the way for David Cameron to replace him.

Brown announced his intention outside 10 Downing Street -- the prime ministerial residence -- before being driven to Buckingham Palace where he formally handed his resignation to the queen.

About one hour after Brown's resignation, Cameron -- leader of the right-wing Conservative Party -- became prime minister.

The Conservatives won the largest number of seats, but not enough to let them govern on their own. Brown's left-wing Labour Party came in second, and the Liberal Democrats third.

Zakaria told CNN that a coalition government between British Liberals and Conservatives could work in many ways, but the parties will remain divided on issues such as the European Union and immigration. Zakaria also feels that Britain's new government will have to make painful budget cuts and tax increases.

Zakaria, author and host of CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS," spoke to CNN on Thursday. Here is an edited transcript:

CNN: With so much discontent with the Labor Party and Gordon Brown -- why didn't David Cameron and the Tories win the election outright?

Fareed Zakaria: Many people think it's because David Cameron is not that charismatic. I tend to think the problem is deeper. Conservativism in Britain got associated with nastiness and nuttiness in the 1990s, and it's taking a while to soften that image. The Tory party brand is still somewhat damaged. Now this might well change once people see Conservatives in government and see that they are quite mainstream. Certainly that's what Cameron is trying to do with his very moderate remarks and gestures to liberals. He called his coalition a "Liberal-Conservative" coalition, even though the Conservatives have 306 seats and the Liberals have only 57.

CNN: On a practical level, how effective can a coalition government be?

Fareed Zakaria: We don't know. Britain hasn't had one since World War II and that was obviously under exceptional circumstances. But on many issues, the two parties are reasonably close and can find ways to compromise. Britain's three parties are all, by American standards, mainstream. The entire British political spectrum would fit inside the Democratic Party, with some Tories being a bit to the right of the Democrats -- but substantially to the left of most Republicans. There is no full-throated American-style conservatism in Britain anymore. Or if there is, its members are hiding. On gun control, nationalized health care, welfare, regulation, the Tories are closer to Democrats than Republicans.

CNN: What about issues such as the EU and immigration? Do you think the Liberal Democrats and the Tories will be able to find common ground on these issues?

Fareed Zakaria: Those are the two areas where there is genuine disagreement. And on both issues, the Conservative position is far more popular. The Liberals are very pro-European -- they want Britain to adopt the Euro. That's a position few people in Britain support -- especially as they watch the Euro go through its troubles right now. On immigration, the Liberals want to give amnesty to illegal immigrants, which in Britain (as in America) is a hot-button. So my guess is, in both cases, the Conservatives will prevail because the Liberals won't push for something so unpopular.

CNN: The primary challenge facing the UK is the economy. Is Cameron up for the challenge?

Fareed Zakaria: That's the key question. It's not just the economy. Britain's budgetary position is not quite as bad as Greece, but it's not so far off either. The new government will have to impose a good bit of pain on the society, in the form of budget cuts, tax increases, etc. Is Britain ready for that? To his credit, Cameron did campaign on the idea of sacrifices and pain. But he never outlined the extent of the cuts he would have to make and left vague what, if anything he would cut. Once things get specific, the howls of protest will begin. But Britain's experiments will be important to watch because Britain's present is America's future. We too will have to impose pain on Americans and no politician so far has been willing to talk about it in any detail.

CNN: Will the U.S. relationship with Great Britain change with the new government in London?

Fareed Zakaria: No, Britain will remain America's closest ally. Britain gets enormous advantages from being that close to the world's only superpower. But I think we'll see less Churchillian rhetoric and a more modest stance. Partly this is because Britain is paring back its world role anyway. It is cutting back the Royal Navy and cutting its expeditionary forces. In that context, grand speeches about spreading democracy and opposing evildoers will sound hollow. And Cameron strikes me as much less grandiose in his vision of foreign policy than Blair.

Typos -- no big deal? Think again

For a few days there, it looked as if the typographical error was finally going to get its moment in the sun.

The lowly typo -- a hastily pecked keystroke with a bad result -- has long been regarded as an irritation, a sloppy glitch, a skimmed-over eyesore. It's really much more than that, which we will delve into in a few paragraphs.

But first, the typo's blown opportunity to gain worldwide stature:

When the financial markets were on the verge of a nervous breakdown this month, on the day the Dow Jones industrial average plummeted almost 1,000 points in 15 minutes, analysts and regulators immediately, frantically, started looking for a reason. Nothing on this scale had ever happened before. Who or what was responsible?

Initially, suspicions centered on the "fat-finger theory." What this meant was that a trader with a symbolically fat finger (meaning a careless one) had purportedly entered a computer-ordered sale of billions of shares of stocks; the theory was that when he had meant to type in "million," he instead typed in "billion."

If this was so, it would have been the typographical error of all time: the Babe Ruth/Muhammad Ali/Frank Sinatra of typos. If one keystroke could put the world's economy on the brink of collapse, this would mean that a typo could be as powerful as an atomic bomb.

By the end of last week, it was looking as if the fat-finger typo might not be the culprit. Mary Schapiro, the chairwoman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, told Congress that while no cause for the financial plunge could be definitively ruled out, the typo-as-Armageddon was increasingly appearing to be an unlikely explanation.

If a typo had been shown to have that kind of muscle, maybe the societal trend to regard typos as no big deal might have been reversed. In our computer-screen age, typos -- and their cousins, misspellings and grammatical errors -- have been given a reprieve. What once prompted people to shake their heads in stern disapproval when it appeared on newspaper or magazine pages -- a flat-out mistake, caused by lazy typing and indifferent proofreading -- produces not as much of a stir when seen on a glowing screen.

The theory seems to be that, in e-mails and instant messages and various other forms of digital discourse, speed counts for more than accuracy, and those whose blood pressures rise when they see such typos are stodgy, ancient, out of touch. The contemporary attitude is: Who cares if a few words are mistyped?

But it's a matter of discipline. It's a matter of diligence. You may have heard the wonderful story in recent days about what happened when CNN senior producer David Daniel was walking to work at the network's Los Angeles bureau. Daniel was striding along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as he does each morning en route to the office, when he glanced down at a newly installed pink stone star on the sidewalk.

It was a star that was going to be introduced to the public that very day. It was intended to honor the actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Except the name on the star was:

Julia Luis Dreyfus.

No "o" in Louis. No hyphen.

Daniel, who told me he takes pride in being a longtime copy editor, could not simply walk on by. Dismayed, he stared at the star.

"I'm one of those annoying people who notices typos on restaurant menus," he told me.

"Annoying?" Hardly. When it comes to words, he's a stickler, which is a fine thing to be. What he did next has elevated him into contention for patron saint of sticklers:

He phoned in a correction. He couldn't let this pass. He called the people who run the Hollywood Walk of Fame, told them about their typo that was set in stone and made certain the star got fixed.

"I can't help it," he told me. "I go crazy when I see missing apostrophes."

He was preaching to the choir. My own obsessed-proofreader story is not quite as good as Daniel's, but it establishes us as kindred spirits. Some years ago, during my first and only visit to Shea Stadium in New York, I was with some friends watching the Mets play the Chicago Cubs in a night game.

Ryne Sandberg of the Cubs, who would go on to be voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, came up to bat.

In Shea Stadium there was a huge video screen behind center field, and as each batter came to the plate a gigantic color photo of him appeared on the screen, accompanied by his name.

Sandberg's smiling face was up on the screen, all right. So was the name, in huge letters visible all over the stadium:

"Ryan Sandberg."

Not Ryne. Ryan.

I knew I shouldn't say anything. I knew, in the scheme of all the world's woes, it would make no difference. I knew I should just sit back and enjoy the ball game on a lovely, warm evening.

But I couldn't help myself. I sought out a front-office executive of the Mets.

"Look," I said, pointing to the outfield.

"What's wrong?" he said.

It took him about 15 seconds to figure it out.

"Oh, my," he said.

That night was my version of the Julia Louis-Dreyfus star. At Sandberg's next at-bat, Ryan became Ryne.

A small victory for precision, perhaps. But we all take such victories where we find them. I half-wish that it had, indeed, been a typo that sent the Dow into that tailspin. It would have imbued typos with the seriousness they deserve, and would have been an inspiring triumph for sticklers everywehre.
